A quick reminder – What does the primary school year look like?

Thanks to the (often unseen due to being stuffed at the bottom of a book bag) barrage of leaflets and emails that you will likely have received from your child’s school over the course of the year, you may already be familiar with the term and holiday dates.

This should help you to work out at what point in the school year you are at, and decide when is the right time to get a maths tutor for your child.

However, as the dates vary from school to school and county to county, here’s a quick reminder of the UK school term dates.

Please bear in mind that these are approximate dates as each school/district is different, so you should always check your child’s school’s website for accurate information.

Autumn term dates

Early September –  Middle / Late December

Normally children go back to school around the 3rd September and will break up around the 20th December.

Autumn half term holiday

This week usually falls near the end of October.

Christmas holidays

The 2-week Christmas break normally begins just before Christmas Eve and runs through the first week of January.

Spring term dates

This 2-week break falls around Easter Sunday itself, which can change from year to year.

Summer term dates

This week usually falls around the end of May.

Summer holidays

The long summer break normally begins around middle/late July and runs through until school starts again in September.

So when is the right time to get a maths tutor for my child?

With each school term and holiday seeming to fly by in an instant, it is important to know when’s the right time to commit to a maths tutor for your child.

With each year group studying different things at different points of the year, it can be tricky to know whether you should look to give your Year 4 child a boost in the summer, or whether you should wait until the new year, or if you should start SATs prep for your Year 6 child as soon as possible, or whether you should wait until nearer the SATs in May to ensure everything is as fresh in their mind as it can be.

That’s why, to help you out, we’ve broken down the school year on a term by term basis and will be going through each part of the year to help you discover when’s the best time to secure a maths tutor for your child.

Should I get a maths tutor for my child over the summer holidays?

Summer Holidays tutoring

It doesn’t matter if your child is off school for five, six or even seven weeks over the summer.

They all mean that they are away from education for a long time!

Whilst we can’t advocate encouraging your child to relax and recuperate over the summer enough, there is always the risk of the dreaded ‘brain drain’ taking place.

This is the term given to the loss of skills and knowledge that can occur as a result of this extended break from school, and it often results in educators needing to refresh previously learnt material again once pupils return in September.

Luckily though, a light touch is all that is needed when it comes to working on maths over the summer, and a weekly one-to-one tuition session could be just the thing to prevent your child forgetting the maths they have spent a whole school year learning!

Reasons you should consider getting your child a tutor over the summer holidays

It can help prevent the summer brain drain!

As discussed above, the summer brain drain (also known as the summer slide) is a real threat to everything your child has put so much effort into learning over the past year, but fortunately getting a maths tutor can help you to prevent this.

If you do choose to get a maths tutor for your child over the summer holidays, the key is to approach this with a light touch as to not interrupt your child’s chance to relax and your own summer schedule.

Fortunately, that is where Matr’s online, one-to-one maths programmes fit in perfectly.

Each lesson can take place remotely, anywhere there is access to a computer and an internet connection, and with sessions lasting anywhere from 30 minutes up to one hour, your child can practice their maths on the go and be back outside enjoying the summer before they know it!

More tutor slots will be available due to fewer parents taking advantage of this time period

The summer holidays are a time when tutors often have more availability, and it can therefore be easier to secure your desired tutor if you book in sessions now.

By getting a headstart over the holidays, not only will your child get an extra boost before heading back to school, but they will also be able to lock in their favourite tutor when they return should they need to keep their tuition sessions going.

The summer is a great time to plug gaps in your child’s knowledge

With so much information being thrown at them over the course of a school year, it is inevitable that your child may miss a thing or two as they grow and learn.

This isn’t a cause for panic though, as a good tutor will be able to plug these gaps, often in more detail than a class teacher would be able to. This is because a one-to-one tutor, such as those available on Matr, will be able to focus their full attention on your child and your child only, whereas their class teacher has to share their attention between 29 other children!

It is a fantastic time to build foundations to ensure your child hits the ground running come September

With a fair amount of ‘down time’, A.K,A time when your child is away from school, over the summer, it can be a great opportunity to get ahead of the game for the following school year.

By getting a tutor over the summer holidays, your child will be able to become familiar with the new theories and methods of working that they will be introduced to in the next school year.

This means that rather than heading into the unknown in September, they will be able to approach everything with confidence and improve upon the foundations they have formed with their tutor over the summer break rather than start from scratch.

Should I get my child a tutor over the summer holidays?

The summer holidays are a good time to get a maths tutor for children in:

  • Year 3
  • Year 4
  • Year 5
  • Year 6

It is also worth noting that if your child is in Year 6, that most schools stop focusing so much on maths and English after the SATs take place in May, so this could mean that your child won’t have done any maths work for a good few weeks by the time they come into Year 7.

Getting a tutor over the summer holidays is a good way to prevent this from becoming an issue when they start secondary school

Reasons you should consider getting your child a tutor in the Autumn term

Autumn Term Maths Tutoring

Autumn term means back to school for your child, and back into the school routine for you, so chances are finding a maths tutor to help in at this point of the year is not near the top of your priority list.

However…

Getting a tutor now can make a huge difference to your child!

Autumn is a time when new concepts, theories and words will be coming at your child thick and fast, so it is very important that they have a helping hand now to keep their progress on track!

Here are some of the reasons why getting a tutor in the Autumn term could be the right time for your child.

It can help prevent them falling behind at the beginning of the school year

As already discussed, the beginning of the year is a busy period for primary school children and there is a lot to learn.

This means that unfortunately, there is the chance that some children may fall slightly behind their peers, and if this happens it can be difficult to catch up afterwards.

Getting a tutor in to cement knowledge and plug any gaps that may appear during the Autumn term is a great way to ensure that your child won’t fall behind their peers.

Getting a tutor in the Autumn means that they have enough time to make an impact

Getting a tutor in won’t always cause an immediate impact, and it can take time for them to become familiar with your child’s skills and the elements that they need an extra bit of help with.

By getting a tutor on board in Autumn, there is plenty of time for both tutor and child to bond, and to get the most from the relationship.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a maths master!

Fortunately, here at Matr all of our tutors are experts in making an immediate impact, and we have plenty of experience in helping children achieve a lot in maths in a short space of time. In one school helped children to achieve 7 months progress in just 14 weeks, so it’s safe to say that our experience can help your child in the Autumn term.

A tutor can help your child to cement the new concepts that are being taught at this early stage

It might be fractions, times tables or even the bar model, but it is guaranteed that thanks to having just switched year groups, your child will be faced with a whole host of new topics and challenges in the Autumn term.

This can all seem a little overwhelming to young minds, and that is why having an expert tutor that your child can bounce ideas and issues off of is a good idea at this stage. If your child is finding addition annoying or shapes a strain, then being able to go over these problems with a tutor can get this knowledge locked in early!

The Autumn Term is a particularly good time to get a maths tutor for children in:

  • Year 3
  • Year 4

It is never too early to get a maths tutor on board though, so if you think that your child may need a helping hand and they are in Year 5 or Year 6, don’t hesitate to get a tutor on board!

Reasons you should consider getting your child a tutor in the Spring term

Spring Term Maths Tutoring

Depending on what year group your child is in, the Spring term forms a crucial part of primary school life.

The SATs take place at the end of the term, so now is the time to ensure that your child will be ready for them when the time comes.

Fortunately, if you begin tuition and revision early enough in the term there is plenty of time for your child to nail numbers and master multiplication.

Here are some of the reasons why you should get a tutor for your child in the Spring term.

SATs are coming up for Year 6 children, so extra help is always welcome

As we’ve already touched upon, the end of the Spring term is when the SATs take place, and that means that this is the perfect time to give your child a boost in the run up to the tests.

A good maths tutor will be able to help your child fill in any gaps in their knowledge that they may have, and push and challenge them to grasp all topics in greater depth.

This will stand them in very good stead when the SATs do roll around, and should help them to achieve all they can in the tests.

Children will be settled into their new year group by now, so this is when you can help to take their learning to the next level

Autumn term is often a time of adapting and adjusting for many children as they will have just moved up to a new school year group.

However, by the time the Spring term is upon us, they will have settled in, made new friends and begin to grasp the new concepts they are learning.

This means that now is a good time to get a tutor to help them cement this new knowledge and capitalise on their settled state, and that is exactly what Matr tutors are trained to do.

Things can start to get tricky in the Spring term for all years

With new topics designed to test and challenge children being taught throughout primary schools in the Spring term, it can be a time when children can feel a little overwhelmed.

Having an expert that can go through the topic that has just been taught in the classroom can help to secure new knowledge and prevent cognitive overload, meaning your child will have a much smaller chance of forgetting what they have just learned.

There are times throughout the day when adults need to go over things two or three times, and this is no different for a primary school child!

Reasons you should consider getting your child a tutor in the Summer term

Summer Term Maths tutoring

The summer term is a time when SATs have been sat, revision has been completed and many schools now begin to wind down ever so slightly.

However, that is not to say that learning stops!

The summer term can be a great time to get your child a maths tutor for a number of reasons, and we will be taking a look at them below!

A summer term maths tutor can help to ease the transition into next year

To many parents who have been out of school for decades, moving up a primary school year group may not seem like a big deal, but for the children who will be going through the move, it can feel like a huge change.

Schools also put more of a focus on subjects other than maths and English during the summer term, and when this is combined with the upcoming summer holidays, it can mean that there is a large period of time when your child doesn’t do any maths at all!

That’s why getting a maths tutor in during the summer term can kill two birds with one stone and:

  1. Help soften the blow of moving up a year group
  2. Ensure that your child’s maths skills don’t get rusty when they are out in the sun!

By helping your child to become familiar with some of the maths that is going to be taught the following year and keeping everything they have recently learned fresh in their minds, you can help them to understand that the jump up isn’t that scary at all!

Here are some of the reasons why summer term could be the right time to get a maths tutor for your child.

The summer term is a good time to help your child rediscover the joys of maths

With things often winding down slightly in the summer term, it can be a good time to help your child that maths doesn’t have to be all about fiddly fractions or dull decimals.

Here’s a simple way you can make maths fun over the summer using some pool noodles!

A good maths tutor will be able to use this time to reaffirm how exciting maths can be for your child, helping them to build upon the skills they have learned throughout the year so far and enjoy maths in a stress free environment.

At Matr we have put a firm focus on making our maths lessons enjoyable for children, so as well as learning all about the world of maths, children will have fun whilst doing so!

Now is a great time to catch up on anything that your child may have missed or isn’t confident in after a year if school work

With the school year coming to an end, now is the time to reflect and see if there are any gaps in your child’s knowledge.

A year in primary school is a long time, and with so much to learn there are bound to be areas of the curriculum that children are not as confident in.

Maybe your child was ill and missed the first two days of fractions?

Or maybe they are not as confident in their times tables as they are with shapes?

Whatever the case may be, the summer term is the best time to sit back, reflect and target the areas that your child may be weakest in to help them improve.

Confidence, especially amongst young children, is a fickle thing, so by getting tuition over the summer term you’ll be helping your child to remain confident in all areas of maths and beyond!
